Themes Flashcards
How is comedy and satire
Comedy = SITR pokes fun at the ridiculous nature of the movie industry - specifically how vert little Hollywood is actually how it appears: the biggest, brashest, loudest example is Lina
Satire = SITR also wrings laughs from the movie industry less-than-magical-reality by criticising it. That makes it a satire, which is a branch of comedy that uses exaggeration and irony to show how silly or stupid something is, usually by highlighting its shortcomings
- fit as a fiddle, make em laugh, Moses supposes, good morning, broadway melody
How is Romance and Relationships shown?
Romance = a love story between Don and Kathy that adheres pretty closely to the conventions of the genre
- you were meant for me, singing in the rain
How is lies an deceit shown?
lies = the characters are also frequently quiet honest - anytime somebody sings or dances, they seem to be totally truthful. The movie suggests that, while you should never believe what you hear, or even what you see, song and dance communicates the truth. According to SITR, dancing is the sincerest expression of emotion
- fit as a fiddle, all I do is dream of you, would you?
How is respect and reputation shown?
reputation = the idea of status, or prestige, being super-important is central to SITR, and it goes hand in hand with another of the films themes; lies and deceit.
All of the main characters are willing to lie if they think it will win them respect and/or boost their reputation
- beautiful girl montage, would you?, broadway melody
