Theme E Flashcards
Poverty and upbringing
Poverty is acceptable, as Christians condemn stealing, should help one another, so they don’t steal, “love thy neighbor”, meaning should help them
Might grow in home where crime is part of life, parents might encourage them, knowing what is right from living what is wrong.
Mental illness and addiction
Should help them during their illness. Should be treated, for their illness, but should get punishment.
Muslims forbid taking of drugs, or alcohol. ‘they ask you about wine…in them is a great sin”, temptations leading will be wrong.
Greed and hate
Hate can lead to violence, towards, or whoever offender hates.
Against Muslim Morality.
10 commandments say do not be jealous, seen as 1 of the deadly sin in Christianity, can lead
Opposition to a hate law
Protests must be peaceful, as god said “blessed are the peacemakers”, so it is wrong, as not promoting peace, instead violence.
Allowed, as may be due to unequal law, and the Quran mentions “we have created you from male and females, and made you people and tribes, so that you can recognize each other”, laws biased, should be changed,=everyone equal.
Christians believe everyone is equal. “one in christ”, meaning should promote peace, and should protes
Hate crime
christians think all humans, are created in gods image, equal. ‘you are all one in Christ”, meaning to love, not hate.
Muslims think god created everyone, so they can recognize each other. “made you into nations and tribes, so that you may know each other”. Hate crime is against this wording.
Murder
Wrong, as god can only take life, Destroying a human created in the “image of god”, which is wrong, as god wont like that.
Wrong, as “whoever kills a person, it shall be as if he had killed all mankind”, against god wills, and should not be committed.
Theft
Wrong, as god mentions in Quran “for the thief cut of their hand”, they are corrupt element in society, if left unpunished, will spread, and cause everyone else.
Strongly against, told to care others, “love your Neighbour”, committing crime such as theft, doesn’t treat victim
Forgiveness for
core belief in Christianity, Jesus emphasized it. Forgive in order to be forgiven. “forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us”. No limit to god’s love, and forgiveness, so should not be ours.
Important element, as “god is forgiving”, meaning if he can forgive, you can also.
retribution
law of retaliation is mentioned in the old testament. “take life for an life..” Pay for what they have done, show support towards victim.
Al Jinayaat crime mean if life is taken victim can grant mercy, or death penalty, meaning they should be killed, as they have killed a innocent life. Also not portraying “do not take life, which god has made sacred”
deterence
controls public behavior. For example, committing zina, whipped 100 times in public. Shame offender, but warn others.
Burglar going to prison, for 5 years, won’t want to go again, for 5 years, find other legal way. Changes way of thinking, scared of going to prison.
reformation
Christians=”if a person is caught in a sin, you live by the spirit should restore that person” should help, if real Christian, Jesus did the same, teach right way, done with love, so could reform.
Muslims=reformation, punishment should give criminals opportunity to see error, people can
prision
prison supports reformation, give them place to live, but locked up, to make them understand what they did was wrong. “if a person is caught in a sin, you live by the spirit should restore that person” prison helps.
Shariah laws, have less role in reforming, only used when awaiting trial, lose freedom, and ability to see family, which is important in Islam
corporal punishment
Accepted in Islamic countries. Shariah laws states “cut of the hands of thieves”, means that less crimes committed, and person understood there mistake.
Islam allows, for example, whip 100 times, if committed zina, means would prevent it, as would be humiliation and pain.
community services
Suitable punishment for minor offences, might help with addictions and help with drugs addiction, sending them therapy, aim of deterring and reformation.
Rarely used under Shariah, not deterrent, criminal may be send to rehabilitation Centre, for community crimes.
forgiveness against
If in serious crime, family member murdered, not a way of forgive, seek justice, rather than forgiveness.
Forgiveness is a quality of god, conditional, must be sorry, recognize wrong, commit not to repeat, without this forgiveness, cannot be granted.
