Refers to the reoccurring or emerging ideas about the world that are found and In a work of literature
Theme
Idea about life that are found throughout world literature because they can be understood by people of all times and places
Universal theme
Use of language to convey meaning of other than what is directly stated contradiction and what is expected and what actually happens
Irony
Contrast between what is normally expected to happen with actually does happen
Situational irony
Words have meaning other than what is directly stated
Verbal irony
Contribution with the reader/audience knows and what the characters themselves know
Dramatic irony
Simplest form of three much like a proverb shorter statement
Moral
Main idea of a work which is clearly stated within the work itself
Explicit theme
Main idea that must be discerned by the reader from the details, information that the author includes in the work
Implicit theme
Extended metaphor that forms a story with two levels of meaning
Allegory
Person place thing or idea that mean something in addition to itself
