Ideas about life that are found throughout world literature b/c they can be understood by people of all times and places
Universal theme
The reason for composing his work; the purpose for the composition
Authorial intent
Use of language to convey meaning other than what is directly stated: contradictions in what is expected and what actually happens
Irony
Contrast between what is normally expected to happen and what actually does happen
Situational irony
Words have meaning other than what is directly (obviously) stated
Verbal irony
Contrast between what the reader/audience knows and what the characters themselves know
Dramatic irony
Simplest form of theme;much like a proverb, short, pithy overt statement
Moral
Main idea of a work which is clearly stated within the work itself
Explicit theme
Main idea that must be discerned by the reader for the details, information that the author includes in the work
Implicit theme
Extended metaphor that forms a story with two levels of meaning
Allegory
Person, place, thing, or idea that means something in addition to itself
Symbol
Refers to the reoccurring or emerging ideas about the world that are found in a work of literature
