Theme 5 - Processes and interactions within ecosystems Flashcards
What are two main characteristics of large-scale ecosystems?
.rainfall
.temperature
What are some examples of biomes?
.desert
.tropical rainforest
.taiga
.savanna
What is the relationship between biotic and abiotic parts of the ecosystem?
interdependent relationship (if one part of the ecosystem is altered then the whole ecosystem will be changed
Water cycle?
movement of water between stores.
Nutrient cycle?
movement of nutrients in the ecosystem between stores.
Food chain?
the interconnections between different organisms that rely on one another as their source of food.
What are 4 ways in which ecosystems provide key services?
.provisioning services - e.g. providing timber for building, foodstuffs such as honey, ext
.regulating services - reducing risk of floods, preventing soil erosion, providing medicines
.cultural services - spiritual and lesure resources (areas to meditate or walk)
.supporting services - e.g. carbon cycle which maintains the conditions needed for life on Earth
