Theme 4a Part 1 Flashcards
What is blending inheritance
Offspring have traits the are intermediate (similar) to their parents
What happens to variation of phenotype overtime if blending occurs?
Variation will be reduced over time
What did mendel do
Tested the hypothesis of blending vs particulate inheritance by using true breeding varieties of peas
What is P1
First parental generation
What is F1
First filial generation
Offspring of P1
What were mendels hypothesis’s
Adult plants carry two copies of genes that give inheritance of a character
If individuals pair of genes consist of diff alleles, one allele is dom over the other
The pair of allele that control a character, separate as gametes. Half of these gametes are haploid ie carry one allele and other half carry the other allele.
Diploid organism get one allele from each parent
When do you use the product rule for probabilities?
When your looking for probability of two independent events happening at same time.
The individual probabilities are mutiplied
Ex. Flipping head twice in a row
1/2x1/2
1/4 probability
When do we use sum rule for probabilities?
When looking for probability that 1 or the other of two diff events will happen
The individual probabilities are added
Ex. probability of a heads and a tails in two tosses.
- Head then tails :1/4
- Tail then heads: 1/4
Total probability: 1/4+1/4=1/2
How did Mendel test if statistical patterns are the same throughout each generation
Tested true breeding strains
Focus on a single trait at a time
Count the progeny
