What is the meaning of population distribution?
How people are spread out over an area. This could be a town, country, the world etc
What is the meaning of population density?
The number of people per KM2
What does densely populated mean?
An area with lots of people in it.
What does sparsely populated mean?
An area with few people in it.
How are birth and death rates measured?
Number of births/deaths per 1000 of the population per year.
What does infant mortality mean?
Number of infants that die before their 1st/5th birthday.
What does life expectancy mean?
Average number of years a person is expected to live.
Name 4 sparsely populated areas in the world
Polar regions, Amazon Rainforest, Sahara Desert, Himalayan Mountains
What is the main reason which explains why some environments are sparsely populated?
Weather/Climate.
Why are some areas densely populated?
Availability of jobs, healthcare, education, transport, reliable food and water supplies, good communication, shops, services etc
Gambia has a youthful population. What does this mean?
High % of its population are under 24 years old.
Why does Gambia have a youthful population?
High death rate and low life expectancy due to a lack of medical care and basic services. Large number of adults have HIV so children become orphans.
Which 3 areas of the world do you need to know for this module?
Western Europe, Southern Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa
Why do some countries have a high infant mortality rate?
Lack of education for mothers, poor medical care, lack of vaccinations etc
Why does a high literacy rate help explain why an country has a slow population rate?
If women are educated they will have less children as they may choose to work, or because the infant mortality rate is lower more children survive.
