Theme 1 - Water Flashcards
What is the meaning of hydraulic action?
The sheer force of water hitting the river bank and washing away loose material.
What is the meaning of abrasion?
When sediment (stones and grit) rub against the river bank and river bed wearing them away.
What is the meaning of solution?
When river water dissolves sediment.
What is the meaning of attrition?
When stones collide with each other in the river and are broken down into smaller pieces.
What is the meaning of distribution?
How something is spread out over an area.
What is the meaning of the word landform?
A feature that has been created naturally.
Name 3 river landforms
Waterfall, meander, oxbow lake, delta, floodplain
How many processes of erosion are there? Name them.
4, Hydraulic Action, Attrition, Abrasion, Solution
How can rivers have positive effects on people?
Tourism (jobs, money), farming (silt makes soil fertile)
How can rivers have negative effects on the lives of people? (explain in detail)
One example - Flooding causes roads to become impassable. Therefore people will find it difficult to go to work or school which will result in a loss of pay/learning.
What is a meander?
A bend in a river.
What is a slip-off slope?
The inside of a meander where slow-moving water deposits sediment/sand/stones/silt.
What is a river cliff?
On the outside of the meander where erosion has undercut the river bank.
Where does hydraulic action take place on a meander?
On the outside of the river bend where the water is moving quickly and hits the side of the river bank.
Where does abrasion occur on a meander?
On the river bed as the water carries sediment.
