¿Cómo es tu instituto?
Mis amigos y yo vamos a un colegio selectivo que se llama Dane Court. Es un colegio moderno que ofrece el Bachillerato Internacional. El edificio no es muy antiguo, pero acaban de instalar unas ventanas nuevas y era muy molesto. Sin embargo, me gusta mucho mi colegio porque ofrece una gran variedad de asignaturas. Desde mi punto de vista, es el mejor colegio de mi zona.
What’s your school like?
My friends and I go to a selective school called Dane Court. It’s a modern school that offers the International Baccalaureate. The building isn’t very old, but we have just installed new windows and it was very distracting. However, I really like my school as it offers a wide variety of subjects. From my point of view, it’s the best school in my area.
¿Qué asignaturas te gustan y cuáles no te gustan? ¿Por qué?
Me chifla la historia porque es interesante y útil pero a veces es pesada. También, me encantan las matemáticas porque son divertidas y muy fáciles. No me gusta nada el drama ya que el profesor no hace más que gritar. Sin embargo, la asignatura que más me gusta es la física dado que el profesor crea un buen ambiente.
What subjects do you like and which do you dislike? Why?
I like history because it is interesting and useful but in my opinion sometimes it is boring. Also, I love maths because it’s fun and very easy. I don’t like drama at all since the teacher just shouts. However, the subject that I like the most is physics since the teacher creates a good atmosphere.
¿Qué hiciste en el colegio ayer?
Ayer tuve cinco clases: matemáticas, inglés, informática, biología y español. En cada clase continuamos repasando para nuestros próximos exámenes. Los exámenes están muy cerca y todo el mundo está bastante nervioso. Después de clase, volví a casa en autobús.
What did you do at school yesterday?
Yesterday I had five lessons which included maths, English, IT, biology and Spanish. In each lesson we continued to revise for our upcoming exams. The exams are now very close and everyone is getting quite nervous. After school, I went home by bus.
¿Qué opinas del uniforme escolar?
Creo que el uniforme escolar reduce el acoso porque presenta a todos como iguales. Sin embargo, a menudo es muy caro e incómodo, sobre todo en verano. Algunos dirián que limita la libertad de expresión, pero creo que es una excusa para que los alumnos lleven su propia ropa.
What’s your opinion on uniforms?
I think school uniform reduces bullying because it presents everyone as equals. However, it is often very expensive and uncomfortable, above all in summer. Some may say it limits freedom of expression, but I think that is an excuse for students to wear their own clothes.
¿Llevabas uniforme en la escuela primaria?
En la escuela primaria teníamos que llevar un jersey verde con un logotipo blanco y pantalones grises. Los profesores decían que si el logotipo fuera dorado, el uniforme habría sido el doble de caro. No me gustaba mi uniforme porque era incómodo.
Did you used to wear a uniform at primary school?
In primary school we had to wear a green jumper with a white logo and grey trousers. The teachers said that if the logo was gold, the uniform would have been twice as expensive. I didn’t like my uniform because it was uncomfortable.

En mi escuela primaria el trabajo era mucho más fácil que ahora. Por lo tanto, mi escuela primaria era más divertida que aquí. Había un comedor pero mi insti tiene una cantina. Mi escuela primaria era un poco pequeña, mientras mi escuela secundaria es bastante grande.
Compare your primary school with your secondary school.
In my primary school the work was much easier than now. Therefore, my primary school was more fun than here. There was a dining hall but my secondary school has a canteen. My primary school was a bit small, whereas my secondary school is quite large.
¿Qué planes tienes para seguir estudiando en el futuro?
El año que viene empezaré el primer año del Bachillerato Internacional. Este curso requiere que los alumnos estudien seis asignaturas. Todos deben estudiar matemáticas, inglés, una lengua extranjera, una humanidad y una ciencia. La última asignatura es de libre elección, con lo que estudiaré una segunda ciencia. No sé muy bien qué quiero estudiar, pero me veo haciendo matemáticas, inglés, física, informática, geografía y francés.
What plans do you have for continuing to study in the future?
Next year I will start the first year of the International Baccalaureate. This course requires students to study six subjects. Everyone must study maths, English, a foreign language, a humanity and a science. The last subject is a free choice, which I will use to study a second science. I’m not quite sure what I want to study, but I could see myself doing Maths, English, Physics, Computer Science, Geography and French.
¿Tienes un trabajo a tiempo parcial?
De momento, no tengo un trabajo a tiempo parcial. Sin embargo, este verano, después de mis exámenes, me gustaría encontrar un trabajo. Creo que me ayudará a pasar el tiempo y además podré ganar algo de dinero.
Do you have a part-time job?
At the moment, I don’t have a part time job. However, this summer, after my exams, I would like to find a job. I think that it will help pass the time and I will also get to earn some money.
¿En qué te gustaría trabajar en el futuro?
Nunca he sabido de qué quería trabajar. Creo que el mundo está cambiando muy rápidamente y cada día se crean nuevos puestos de trabajo. Aunque me entusiasman los recientes avances tecnológicos, pienso que muchos trabajos serán sustituidos, y puede que no encuentre un trabajo que me interesa. Cuando sea mayor, quizá no necesite trabajar, pero parece poco probable.
What would you like to do for work in the future?
I never knew what I wanted to work in. I think the world is changing very fast and each day new jobs are being created. Although I am excited about recent technological advances, I think that many jobs will be replaced, and I may not find a job that interests me. When I’m older, I may not need to work, but it seems unlikely.
¿Qué otras ambiciones tienes?
Cuando sea mayor, quisiera ser felíz. No voy a viajar, porque voy a hacer una licenciatura. No quiero tener hijos ni casarme. En cambio, espero encontrar un buen trabajo y tener independencia. Cuando tenga dieciocho años voy a aprender a conducir ya que me encanta aprender nuevas cosas. También, me gustaría pasar tiempo con mis amigos.
What other ambitions do you have? / What things are the most important in life? Why?
When I’m older, I would like to be happy. I’m not going to travel because I’m going to do a degree. I don’t want to have children or get married. Instead, I hope to find a good job and have independence. When I am eighteen I am going to learn to drive as I love learning new things. In addition, I would like to spend time with my friends.
¿Te gustaría tomarte un año sabático?
Nunca he querido tomarme un año sabático porque creo que debo dar prioridad a ir a la universidad y conseguir un trabajo. Los años sabáticos son muy caros y no me preparan para la vida. Cuando me jubile me encantaría viajar, pero de momento quiero centrarme en mis estudios. Sin embargo, cuando sea mayor habrá menos paisajes que ver debido a la deforestación, la contaminación y el cambio climático.
Would you like to take a gap year?
I have never wanted to take a gap year because I think I must give priority to going to university and getting a job. Gap years are really expensive, and won’t prepare me for later life. When I have retired I would love to travel, but at the moment I want to focus on my education. However, when I am older there will be less landscapes to see due to deforestation, pollution and climate change.
¿Crees que es importante aprender idiomas?
Pienso que es importante aprender otros idiomas dado que mejora tus perspectivas laborales, y te abre la mente. Además, te permite conocer nuevos sitios y trabajar en el extranjero. También aumenta tu confianza y estimula el cerebro. Desde mi punto de vista, te hace parecer más inteligente.
Do you think that it is important to learn other languages? Why (not)?
I think it is important to learn other languages as it improves your job prospects, and opens your mind. It also allows you to get to know new places and work abroad. It also increases your confidence and stimulates your brain. From my point of view, it makes you more intelligent.
¿Te gustaría casarte en el futuro?
No me gustaría casarme en el futuro porque soy un poco impaciente. Además, no creo en el matrimonio porque mis padres nunca se han casado. No creo que sea importante estar casado para ser feliz.
Would you like to get married in the future?
I would not like to get married in the future because I am a bit impatient. Also, I don’t believe in marriage because my parents have never been married. I don’t think it is important to be married to be happy.
¿Cuáles son las diferencias entre los colegios en Inglaterra y en España?
En los institutos en España, los alumnos tienen seis clases y dos recreos por día. Sin embargo, aquí, alumnos tienen cinco clases, un recreo y tiempo para la comida cada día. Aquí, llamamos a nuestros profesores por su apellido mientras en España llaman a sus profesores por su nombre de pila.
What are the differences between Spanish schools and your school?
In schools in Spain, students have six classes and two breaks per day. However, here, students have five classes, a break and time for lunch each day. Here, we call our teachers by their surname whereas in Spain they call their teachers by their first name.
¿Cómo sería tu colegio perfecto?
Mi colegio ideal ofrecería una gran variedad de asignaturas. Creo que soy fuerte en muchas asignaturas y me gustaría continuar estudiando la mayoría de las asignaturas que estudio ahora. Siempre me ha gustado jugar al aire libre en un campo de fútbol. Por lo tanto, mi colegio ideal tendría muchas instalaciones deportivas. Además, para no tener que utilizar tanto papel, habría muchos ordenadores modernos.
What would your perfect school be like?
My ideal school would offer a big variety of subjects. I believe that I am strong in lots of subjects and I would like to continue studying the majority of the subjects that I study now. I have always liked playing outside on a football pitch. Therefore, my ideal school would have lots of sports facilities. In addition, so that we wouldn’t need to use as much paper there would be lots of modern computers.
