Theme 3 Flashcards
What are the three main trends in industry and technology? (3)
- Growth in service industry sector.
- Increased use of mechanization / automation.
- Increased use of technologically sophisticated equipment.
What is perception?
Stage of cognition in which you become aware of sensation and interpret it.
What are the main concepts in perception? (5)
- Absolute threshold: minimum amount.
- Differential threshold: smallest difference / change that senses can detect.
- Signal detection theory: ability to detect stimuli
- Sensory adaptation: gradual decline in sensitivity to prolonged stimulation
- Situational awareness: perception of elements
What are the factors that effect response selection? (5)
- Decision complexity: number of alternative responses
- Response expectancy: expected info is processed faster than unexpected info
- Compatibility: relationship between stimulus and expected consequence of response.
- Speed-accuracy trade-off
- Feedback
What are the main types of attention? (5)
- Selective attention: situation in which you are required to monitor multiple sources of info - filter out certain channels of info.
- Focused attention: task force you to cope with multiple channels but only focus on one, exclude all the others
- Divided attention: multiple stimuli present but multiple tasks are being performed together.
- Sustained attention: must watch for signals over long period of time
- Lack of attention: not concentrating on task
What are the ways you can improve divided attention? (3)
- Minimize number of input channels
- Reduce level of difficulty
- Reduce similarity of task
How can you improve performance in tasks that require sustained attention? (5)
- Rotate workers
- Increase intensity of signal
- Provide feedback
- Emphasize importance of consequences
- Provide optimal environment
What are some of the possible causes of boredom? (6)
- Short cycle timed tasks.
- Low requirements of body movements
- Warm environments
- Lack of social interaction
- Low motivation
- Power environmental conditions e.g. poor lighting
What are the design principles of a display? (7)
- Legible displays
- Avoid absolute judgement limits / precision decisions
- Top-down processing
- Redundancy gain: message should be expressed more than once in alternative forms
- Discriminability: signals should not look similar
- Pictorial realism
- Moving part principle
What are the different types of displays? (8)
- Quantitative - time
- Qualitative - alarm
- Status - something that is bound to change
- Warning / signal
- Representational - maps
- Alpha numerical / symbolic - sheet music
- Identification - static condition
- Time-phased - distributed over time morse code
What are the different types of controls? (6)
- Activation - light switch
- Discrete settings - tv channels & stove levels
- Continuous settings - water tap & volume of radio
- Continuous control - driving car
- Data entry - keyboard
- Tools - hammer
What are the design principles of controls? (7)
- Position / location
- Shape
- Size
- Color
- Labels
- Grouping
- Proximity
What are the main cognitive tasks? (3)
- Decision making
- Planning
- Problem solving
