What is a regional assembly, and how is it different to a parliament give 2 examples
An assembly is a body that get to make limited decisions for that region it’s different to a parliament in that it has less power
What is a referendum?
When people vote yes or no on an issue
Describe what a devolution is
Power is given from central government to a sub national level ę.g (state or region)
What is suffrage?
The right to vote
Give 3 examples of type of government
Democracy (UK)
Monarchy (Saudi Arabia)
Dictatorship (North Korea)
What is the difference between an absolute monarchy and a Constitutional monarchy? And give an example of a country
In an Absolute monarchy, the monarch exercises complete governing power as head of state and head of government ę.g Salman of Saudi Arabia
On the other hand a Constitutional monarch has power that is limited by law
How can citizens participate in democracy other than voting in elections?
They can write to their local MP to get their voice heard
Any British citizen aged 18 without a criminal record can become an MP
What are the factors that make up someone’s identity and give examples
Ethnic identity - Asian
Language- Dutch
Religious Identity - Hindu
People can identify with work or leisure groups- LFC fan, labour supporter
Why is tolerance important?
Especially in the UK which is very diverse without tolerance for others there can be a lot of tension between different groups ę.g fights between football fans
How is community cohesion/ appreciation of different identities encouraged ?
Students at GCSE must take a class of a different language so they can know more about cultural diversity
Foreigners that want to become a British citizen must pass a ‘Life in the UK’ test which encourages integration
What are the oppurtunities and barriers to citizen barriers?
You can try to become an MP but You must be over 18 and not have a criminal record if you want to become an MP
You can vote if your over 18 people in jail can’t vote neither can people who are mentally ill
What impact have migration and integration had on communities in the UK?
Migration has blamed as the cause for stress on housing and the long wait at GP’s.
Helps our country to be multi cultural
Racism from people against multiculturism in the UK BNP support views that other cultures shouldn’t be allowed to live in the UK
What is equality
People are given the same rights and oppurtunities no matter what race, age or gender they are
How has Political power in the UK become more decentralised?
Some powers from Westminster were devolved and given to the individual countries
Northern Ireland and Wales each have either
The National Assembly for Wakes
Northern Ireland Assembly
Scotland have more power as they have a Parliament, they get to set laws and control policy except for foreign affairs and monetary policy
State 3 rights we have and responsibilities that go with them
Not to be discriminated against- don’t discriminate against others
Right to freedom of religion- Respect other people’s religions
Right to education- attend school and don’t disturb other people’s education
