Differences between Monotheism and Polytheism
Monotheism is the belief of one God. Examples include Confucianism, Christianity, Judaism, Islam, and Hinduism (some sects). Polytheism is the belief of more than one God. Examples include Buddhism and Hinduism.
Polytheism
The earliest belief systems focused on the idea of that a powerful spirit inhabited every element of nature. In later belief systems, followers often worshiped gods associated with natural forces - such as rain, sun, or fire - or forces related to life and death. Of the many Hindu gods, the three most important are a creator, a preserver, and a destroyer. Other belief systems, such as those of the Greeks and Romans, identified each god with human characteristics and behaviors. For example, the Greek god Hermes was know as a trickster and a theif
Monotheism
Judaism, Christianity, and Islam share the belief that one god created the universe and rules over it. Jews believe that gods law is clear. “You shall have no other gods before me. “ Jesus, among whose followers Christianity developed, was a Jew. For that reason, much of the Jewish belief system was incorporated into Christianity, including it monotheism. Muslims, or followers of Islam, believe they should serve god by accepting five basic duties. The first is the daily declaration of faith that “there is no God but Allah”
Indian Caste System
Was ranked by occupation. The highest group was made up of the priests. Next was the warriors and kings. The third included herders, farmers, artisans, and merchants. The fourth were the servants. The lowest were the untouchables.
Similarities between major monotheistic religions
Each of the three major religions have places in which all of the followers of the religion worship God and read from their holy books. Each of the major monotheistic religions believe in the idea of Jesus being the son of god.
