The Working Units of Life - Cells Are The Fundamental Units of Life Flashcards
What is the cell theory?
all living things are composed of cells, come from pre-existing cells, and evolve from a common ancestor (modern cells)
What are the two types of electron microscopes? Difference between the two?
scanning electron microscopy (SEM) - focus a beam of electrons onto the surface of a specimen
transmission electron microscopy (TEM) - focus a beam of electrons through a specimen
The outer-boundary of every cell; a phospholipid bilayer with proteins
cell membrane
everything in the cell except the nucleus
cytoplasm
fluid cytoplasm not contained inside another compartment
cytosol
What do prokaryotes and eukaryotes contain? What does a eukaryote have that a prokaryote doesn’t?
DNA; a nucleus
List the eight compartments inside of a prokaryotic cell.
- capsule
- cytoplasm
- ribosomes
- nucleoid
- cell membrane
- flagellum
- cell membrane
- cell wall
