The working memory model Flashcards
1
Q
The working memory model date
A
1974
2
Q
parts of the working memory model
A
- Central executive
- visuo-spacial sketchpad
- episodic buffer
- Phonological loop
3
Q
Central executive
A
- attentional process
- sends information to different systems
-does not store information - Incoming information
4
Q
phonological loop
A
- articulatory process allows for maintence rehearsal
- phonological store stores words
- Coding is acoustic
- capacity is 2 seconds worth of words
- stores auditory information
5
Q
visuo-spatial sketchpad
A
- stores visual spatial tasks
- Logie suggests there are two parts cache and inner scribe
- only stores 3-4 objects
6
Q
inner scribe
A
how objects are arranged
7
Q
cache
A
stores visual infomationn
8
Q
episodic buffer
A
- added in 2000 by Baddeley
- combines all the other stores
- temporary information store
- capacity is 4 chunks
9
Q
strengths
A
- KF an amnesia patient with poor STM of verbal info but good visual info proves there are separate stores
- Baddeley found that doing two visual tasks at the same time but doing a visual and verbal task is less difficult as they aren’t competing
10
Q
Limitations
A
- unclear if KF has other cognitive problems
- lack of real life application because studies were in controlled lab environments
- Baddeley himself was not satisfied with the explanation of the CE he says its the most important but least understood part
