explanations for forgetting - interference Flashcards
what is interference theory?
- is the cause of forgetting
- two pieces of infomation disrupt each other
- an explanation for forgetting LTM
proactive interference?
when an old memory interferes with a new one
retroactive interference?
when a newer memory interferes with an old one
mcgeoch and mcdonald 1931 found…
in both types of interference the interference is worse when the memories are similar
procedure
- studied RI by chnanging the amount of similarity between 2 sets of materials
- participants had to learn different tyes of new lists
group 1
synonyms
group 2
antonyms
group 3
words unrelated to the original
group 4
consonant syllables
group 5
three digit numbers
group 6
no new list just rested
findings
- group 1 (synonyms) produced worst recall
- this shows interference is strongest when the memories are similar
strengths: baddeley and hitch 1977
-asked rugby players to recall names f the teamd they ha dplayed in a season players who played the most games had the worst recall
-can be applied to real life situations
-increases the validity
limitations
- interefernce may cause frogetting but is unusual
- conditions are rare unlike in a lab where condition is created for an ideal situation for interference
