the working memory model Flashcards
the working memory model
an explanation of how stm is organised and how it functions. It is focused on the part that is active when we are temporarily storing and manipulating information.e.g playing chess. It consists of four main parts.
who developed the wmm
badderly and Hitch
the central executive
an attention process that monitors incoming data ,makes decisions and allocates slave systems to tasks.the ce has a limited processing capacity
the phonological loop
one of the slave systems and it deals with auditory information and preserves the order in which the information arrives in .The pl is subdivided into the phonological store which stores words you hear and the articulatory process. This allows maintenance rehearsal(repeating words in a ‘loop’ to keep them in the working memory while its needed).
visuo-spatial sketchpad
The second slave system is the vss.The vss stores visual and spatial information when required.eg visualising your way home from school.according to baddeley it has a limited capacity of 3-4 objects. The vss is subdivided into the visual cache, which stores visual data and the inner scribe which records the arrangement of objects in the visual field.
The episodic buffer
the third slave system is the episodic buffer.Integrating the visual ,spatial, verbal information maintaining a sense of time sequencing.
