misleading information Flashcards
misleading information
incorrect information given to the eyewitness usually affect the event this can include leading questions and post event discussion
leading question- Loftus and palmer
arranged for participants to watch film clips of car accidents and then gave them leading questions about the film
the leading questions included verbs such as hit, smashed, contacted, bumped and collided
the leading questions biased the eyewitness recall
post event discussion
occurs when there is more than one witness to an event.witnesses may discuss what they have seen with co-witnesses.this may influence the accuracy of each witness recall
Gabbet et al study on post event discussions
part’s watched a video of a crime from different points of view.once watched part’s discussed what they saw individually.71% recalled event that they did not see
one strength of research into misleading information-useful real life applications
this means that the findings gathered form both studies (loftus and palmer) and (gabbert et al) can be used to explain the importance EWT in real life.for example loftus and palmers study can be used to show police the importance of not using leading questions when interviewing eyewitness. This is a strength as this change can help make a massive positive difference in the way the legal system works-reduce the chance of innocent people getting accused for a crime they did not do.
one limitation of research into misleading information- artificial tasks used
this means that the findings covered in artificial settings will not mirror a real life situation. For example, Loftus and Palmer ask their participants to watch a clip of a car accident. This is a limitation as this is a very different experience from watching a real car accident as there is a lack of emotion of stress which may have an influence on eyewitness testimony. This means watching accidents on screen and being asked questions about the events does not replicate a real life situation. Therefore, because participants emotions cannot affect the accuracy of eyewitness testimony, Loftus and Palmer. Research lacks ecological validity.
one limitation of research into eyewitness testimony-answers high in demand characteristics (lab)
this means that the part’s were able to guess the aims of the study and act in a desirable manner.this suggests that if parts were unsure with the question being asked they may have guessed an answer in order to appear helpful to the researcher. However conducted in a lab-strict control over extraneous variables=reduces confounding variables.
