the format in which information is stored in the various memory stores
research on coding
Baddeley gave different lists of words to 4 groups to remember.
group 1(acoustically similar)words sounded similar
group 2(acoustically dissimilar)words sounded different
group 3 (semantically similar)words with similar meanings
group 4(semantically dissimilar) words with different meanings
Then participants were asked to recall the words in the correct order.
Findings from Baddeley’s research
when participant tend to do this immediately after hearing(STM recall),they tended to do worse with a acoustically similar words.
when participants were asked to recall after 20 mins (LTM recall) they tended to do worse with semantically similar words
conclusion of badderley’s study
This suggest information is coded acoustically in the STM
and information is coded semantically in the LTM
evaluation to baddeley’s :weakness-artificial stimuli
one limitation is that he uses an artificial stimuli rather than a meaningful material. The word list had no personal meaning to participants .Therefore we should be cautions when generalising the findings. For example when processing more meaningful information people may use semantic coding even for STM,therefore the findings have limted application.
