the working memory model Flashcards
What is the central executive (WMM)?
it is an attentional process which monitors incoming data and allocates slave systems to tasks and so has limited storage capacity.
what is the phonological loop? (WMM)
it consists of the phonological store and articulatory process. it deals with auditory information and preserves order arrives.
phonological store- stores word they hear
articulatory process-maintenance rehearsal.
what is the visuo-spatial sketchpad(WMM)?
it stores visual and spatial information. it is subdivided into;
visual cache- store visual data
inner scribe- record arrangement of objects in visual field
what is the episodic buffer(WMM)?
it is a temporary store of information. integrates visual ,spatial and verbal info from other stores. maintain sense of time sequencing. link to LTM
what is a limitation of the WMM?
cognitive psychologists argue that the central executive is unsatisfactory as it lacks clarity. the CE should be more specified and should not just be attention as some psychologists argue that it consists many separate components. this means WMM isn’t fully explained.
what is a strength of WMM, Baddeley?
a strength of dual task performance studies support Visuo-spatial sketchpad. baddeley found had difficulty doing 2 visual tasks than doing a visual and verbal task at same time. the greater difficulty is because both visual tasks compete for limited resources. when verbal and visual task simultaneously not competition. dual task activity prove evidence for existence of visuo-spatial sketchpad.
what is another strength of WMM, KF?
it supports idea of separate stm stores as KF a clinical study of a guy with brain damage. he had poor STM ability for verbal info, but could process visual info normally. so phonological loop was damaged but other areas intact. so suggests seperate visual and acoustic stores. however evidence from clinical studies may be unreliable as unique cases so not generalisable.
