multi-store model of memory Flashcards
what is the sensory register?
a stimulus from environment passes into sensory register with other sight, sounds etc. there is a store for each sense. duration- less than 1/2 second. capacity- very high. coding- depend on sense could be visual or auditory
what is the STM?
limited capacity and duration store. duration- 18 to 30 seconds. capacity- 7+/-2. coding-acoustic
what is the LTM?
permanent memory store. when want to recall materials in LTM, transferred back to ltm through retrieval. duration- possibly lifetime. capacity- unlimited. coding- semantic
what is maintenance rehearsal?
it occurs when we repeat material to ourselves. it stays in STM as long as rehearse it.
what is evidence that supports the multi-store model and suggest LTM and STM are different?
baddeley found we mix up words that sound similar when use STM. but mix up words when mean similar things when use LTM. shows that the coding is different, this supports the view that two memory stores are separate.
what is one limitation of the multi-store model of memory?
they argue studies that support MSM use artificial materials as often asked to recall digits, letters even peterson and peterson use consonant syllables with no meaning. whereas in everday life remeber meaningful things. this suggest MSM lack external valditiy, shows how work in lab studies but not in real life.
what is a further limitation of the MSM?
there is evidence to suggest that the LTM is not a unitary store and so the MSM oversimplfies LTM. they argue we have stores for semantic, procedural, episodic, MSM is limited as does not reflect these different types.
