How did hyperinflation affect Germany?
Pensioners on fixed income suffered because pensions became worthless since the value of money was rising dramatically but their incomes remained fixed and weren’t increasing with the ever increasing costs of things such as food.
Restaurants couldn’t print menus because the price had gone up by the time the food had arrived since costs were rising dramatically and at speed.
What made Germany turn into the Weimar Republic?
It was a republic because a republic is where elected representatives possess power.
The new head of state was the President, elected every 7 years.
Article 48 meant that the president could make a law and by-pass the Reichstag.
The president is in charge of the armed forces.
Did Germany sort out it’s problems by 1929? (Yes)
Culture began to flourish due to the Dawes plan and America’s loans.
Stresemann introduced labour exchanges (1927) and unemployment pay for the working class and 3 million new houses were built.
Germany had become powerful again, it joined the League of Nations (1926) and reparations were reduced.
Did Germany sort out it’s problems by 1929? (No)
Unemployment and poverty was still high.
Nationalists disagree with some of the terms of the Locarno treaties such as to accept boarders as drawn up by the Treaty of Versailles.
The flourishing Germany was based on USA loans- what if they wanted the money back? Germany couldn’t afford it.
