The Water Cycle Flashcards
What are the 5 types of water found?
Atmospheric, Cryospheric, Hydrosphere, Oceanic and Terrestrial.
What is atmospheric water?
Water found in the atmosphere; mainly water vapour with liquid water and ice crystals
What is Cryospheric water?
Water locked up on the Earth’s surface as ice.
What is Oceanic water?
Water contained in the Earth’s oceans and seas, but not including inland seas.
What is Terrestrial water?
Consists of groundwater, soil moisture, lakes, wetlands and rivers
What is the Hydrosphere?
A discontinuous layer of water at or near the Earth’s surface, including all liquid and frozen surface waters, groundwater held in soil and rock and atmospheric water vapour.
Where are the main places Cryospheric water is found?
Sea ice, Ice caps, Ice sheets, Alpine glacier, Permafrost
How much freshwater do the Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets contain?
They contain 99% of all freshwater.
What are Alpine glaciers?
Alpine Glaciers are thick masses of ice found in deep valleys or in upland hollows.
What is permafrost?
Permafrost is ground that remains at or below 0 degrees celsius for at least two consecutive years. The thickness of permafrost can vary from 1m to 1,500m
