Stores, Flows etc, Feedback Flashcards
What is a Flow/Transfer?
A form of linkage between one store and another that involves movement of mass
What is an input?
The addition of water/matter/energy into a system
What is a store/component?
A part of the system where energy/mass is stored or transformed
What is a system?
A set of interrelated components working together towards some kinda of process
What are the 3 different systems?
Isolated, Closed and Open
What is an Isolated system?
One which has no interactions with anything outside the system boundary. There is no input or output
What is a Closed system?
A closed system is one where transfers of energy happen both into and beyond the system boundary, but not transfer of matter.
What is an Open system?
An open system is one where matter and energy can be transferred from the system across the boundary into the surrounding environment.
What is dynamic Equlilbrium?
This is where the stores stay the same, because the inputs and outputs are balance a.k.a Dynamic Equilibrium.
What happens if an input where to exceed and output?
What is feedback
When an input changes without any corresponding output change, the stores change, upsetting the equilibrium. This is called feedback
What are the two types of feedback?
Positive and Negative
What is positive feedback?
Positive feedback is where the effects of an action triggers further events to happen, or amplify current events.
What is negative feedback?
Negative feedback is where the effects of an action are nullified by its consequences and knock on effects.
What is an example of Positive feedback?
Global warming melting ice - ice melting water - dark water absorbs heat - increases temperature - Global warming melts ice (again)
What is an example of Negative feedback?
Temperature increase - Increased cloud cover - Reduces incoming solar radiation - Limits warming - Less temperature increase
