the water cycle Flashcards
What is climate?
Climate is the average weather in a place over many years. Climate thakes hundreds, thousands, even millions of years to change
How do we measure wind direction?
Weather vane compass point (N,E,S,W)
How do we measure precipitation?
rain gauge millilitres (ml)
How do we measure air pressure?
barometer millibars (mb)
How do we measure wind speed?
anemometer mph or km/h
How do we measure visibility?
visibility meter meters
How do we measure cloud cover?
eyes oktas
How do we measure temperature?
thermometer °C
What is temperature shown on?
Temperatures are shown on a line graph in red and rainfall is shown as a bar graph in blue. All three axes should be labelled so you know which one to look at for the temp/rainfall line/ bar graph. It should also have a title to show the location the graph is for, and a key
What is convection rain?
Sun heats the land and the air above. Warm air rises, cools and condenses, forming clouds. Rain can then occur
What is relief rain?
Warm, moist air is forced to rise over high areas. Air cools and condenses, forming clouds. Air descends, warms and turns back to water
What is frontal rain?
Warm air is forced to rise over cold air. Condensation forms clouds. It rains heavily along the front
Impacts of climate change
+ More money from toruism - Increased rain - warmer and drier summers - damage to ecosystems - damage to crops
evaporation
evaporation occurs when the sun heats up water in rivers or lakes or the ocean and turns it into vapour or steam. The water vapour or steam leaves the river, lake or ocean, and goes into the air.
precipitation
Precipitation occurs when so much water has condensed that the air cannot hold it anymore. The clouds get heavy and water falls back to the earth in the form of rain, hail, sleet, or snow.
