The Water Cycle Flashcards
Water Cycle
The water cycle is a repeating process that includes water evaporating, condensation, and precipitation.
Evaporation
Evaporation is the first part of the Water Cycle process. What happens is Water warms up and turns into a gas known as Water Vapor.
Condensate
The second part of the Water Cycle, Condensation is when water vapor is turned into a cloud.
Precipitation
Precipitation is the last part of the Water Cycle process. Precipitation is when the Cloud turns into rain, sleet, hail, or snow. After this part of the process the water evaporates once again.
Sublimation
Sublimation is the transition of a substance directly from the solid to the gas phase without passing through the intermediate liquid phase.
Runoff
the draining away of water (or substances carried in it) from the surface of an area of land, a building or structure, etc.
Transpiration
Transpiration is the process by which moisture is carried through plants from roots to small pores on the underside of leaves, where it changes to vapor and is released to the atmosphere. Transpiration is essentially evaporation of water from plant leaves.
Fog
Fog is the only cloud that touches the ground. It makes it harder for people to see which lowers visibility and makes it harder to drive cars as well.
Cumulus
A cumulus is Cumulo- which means “heap” or “pile” in Latin. Cumulus clouds are often described as “puffy”, “cotton-like” or “fluffy” in appearance, and have flat bases.
Stratus
Stratus clouds are low-level clouds characterized by horizontal layering with a uniform base, as opposed to convective or cumuliform clouds that are formed by rising thermals
Cirrus
Cirrus is a genus of atmospheric cloud generally characterized by thin, wispy strands, giving the type its name from the Latin word cirrus, meaning a ringlet or curling lock of hair.
Vertical Cloud
A vertical Cloud, also known as a Thunderhead brings Thunderstorms. It can be at a very high altitude.
Rain
Rain is the liquid that falls during Precipitation. It can began as ice crystals but then it warms up and becomes rain during the process
Hail
When air comes in a cloud it blows the water droplets around and soon it becomes hail.
Snow
When the air is always under 32F or 0ºC, It forms snow during precipitation. It doesn’t warm up a bit.
