The Water Cycle Flashcards
aquifer
An underground layer of sand, gravel, or porous rock that collects water and holds it like a sponge.
transpiration
The process of giving off vapor containing water and waste products, especially through the stomata on leaves.
runoff
A process by which water flows over the surface of the ground.
reservoir
A natural or artificial pond or lake used for the storage of water.
precipitation
A form of water, such as fog, rain, snow, ice, or sleet that condenses from the atmosphere and falls to Earth’s surface.
hydrologic cycle = water cycle
The process by which water moves around the earth from the oceans to the atmosphere to the land and back to the oceans.
evaporation
The change of a liquid into a vapor at a temperature below the boiling point.
crystallization
This process occurs when tiny droplets of water in the atmosphere freeze, sometimes joining together in beautiful patterns forming snowflakes.
condensation
The change of a gas or vapor to a liquid, either by cooling or being subjected to increased pressure.
