Matter Flashcards
atom
The smallest unit of an element, consisting of protons, neutrons and electrons
density
A measure of the compactness of a substance and is equal to the amount of mass per unit volume.
gas
A form of matter in which the molecules are in constant random motion, has no fixed shape or fixed volume.
molecule
A group of two or more atoms linked together by sharing electrons in a chemical bond.
solid
A form of matter in which the molecules are tightly packed, vibrating about a fixed position, has a definite shape and a definite volume.
liquid
A form of matter in which the molecules are tightly packed, but are far enough apart to slide over one another, has no fixed shape but has a fixed volume.
. states of matter
One of the principle conditions in which matter exists, either a solid, liquid or a gas.
condensation
The change of a gas or vapor to a liquid, either by cooling or being subjected to increased pressure.
crystallization
This process occurs when tiny droplets of water in the atmosphere freeze, sometimes joining together in beautiful patterns forming snowflakes.
evaporation
The change of a liquid into a vapor at a temperature below the boiling point.
