Why did the dutch settle at the Cape
They settled at the Cape because they needed a stop point for them to rest before continuing with their journey to the Spice Islands. They found out that the Cape was halfway to their destination which was the perfect stop point for them.
What was the Spice Islands
The spice islands were the areas at the east that the VOC traded with.
Who was the VOC
The VOC was a Dutch trading company that traded with the Spice Islands at the East. VOC stands for Vereenigde Oost Indische Compagnie in dutch. In English, DEIC stands for Dutch East Indian Company
Who worked for the VOC
Most VOC members were generally from The Netherlands, France and Germany
When did they first settle here
They first settled here in 1652
Who was Jan van Riebeeck
He was a navigator and ship captain. He worked for the VOC.
What was he sent to do at the Cape.
He was sent to build a fort in the Cape to protect the soldiers and sailors. He was also sent to grow crops and graze animals for food for the VOC members at the Cape
Why did the VOC permanently decide to settle at the Cape
The permanently decided that because they were not growing enough food at the VOC gardens for the sailors, so they decided to start farms here.
