The Visible Computer Flashcards
Basic Overall 5 Step Process of Computing
- Storage 2. Input - User provides input that directs how the data should be processed 3. Processing 4. Output - The processed data, usually viewed on a monitor, or could be printed out or audio. 5. Storage - Goes back to storage
PCI-E
Peripheral Component Interconnect Express
Where pretty much all your storage and processing is done.
The System Unit.
Everything other than the system unit is?
A Peripheral.
Speakers with a subwoofer are called?
A 2.1 system.
What does a subwoofer equal in speaker numbers?
A subwoofer equals .1
What do all peripherals provide?
All peripherals provide input and output
What do common input devices include?
Common input devices include keyboards, mice, and scanners.
What do common output devices include?
Common output devices include monitors, printers, and speakers.
USB stands for?
Universal Serial Bus (USB)
What is an ethernet connector used for?
An ethernet connector is used by networks if you have a wired network. The one shown is 8 pin and officially named RJ45

CMOS
Complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor (CMOS) /ˈsiːmɒs/ is a technology for constructing integrated circuits. CMOS technology is used in microprocessors, microcontrollers, static RAM, and other digital logic circuits
What is eSATA designed almost exlusively for?
External Sata (eSATA) [External Serial Advanced Technology Attachment] are designed almost exclusively for external hard drives.

S/PDIF
Sony/Philips Digital Interface (S/PDIF) is a fiberoptic cable used for all things audio.

DVI
Digital Visual Interface (DVI) primary video output.

DVI input

HDMI
High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) carries both audio and video.

HDMI interface
Standard, mini, and micro

High end speaker interface for home theater use.
Side speakers (gray), rear speakers (black), and center speaker and subwoofer (orange). Each of those connectors is designed to support two different speakers
What were PS2 connectors used for?
PS2 (Personal System) connectors were used for mice and keyboards and have 6 holes surrounding a larger one. Purple was keyboard, green was mice.

Serial Port
In computing, a serial port is a serial communication interface through which information transfers in or out one bit at a time (in contrast to a parallel port). Throughout most of the history of personal computers, data was transferred through serial ports to devices such as modems, terminals and various peripherals.

mini-DIN
The mini-DIN connectors are a family of multi-pin electrical connectors used in a variety of applications. Mini-DIN is similar to the larger, older DIN connector. Both are standards of the Deutsches Institut für Normung, the German standards body.

Parallel ports
Parallel ports were original connections on the first IBM computers and are still out there a little bit, mainly used for printers and have 25 pin D sub connectors.

VGA
VGA is about the oldest video connector there is.
