A cutting comes from _____, while layering comes from _____.
a shoot
a cane
How many buds are on a cane?
8 to 20
How many buds are on a spur?
2 to 3
What is the difference between Chlorosis, Coulure and Millanderage?
Chlorosis is caused by a lack of nutrients. The leaves yellow, and photosynthesis is restricted. Grapes struggle to ripen, and quality and quantity are reduced. Remedied with the necessary fertilizer.
Coulure is caused by cold, cloudy, and rainy weather during pollination and results in a lower than usual volume of flowers being pollinated.
Millerandage is also caused by cold, cloudy, and rainy weather during pollination and causes the grapes to develop without seeds and remain small.
Coulure and Millerandage both reduce yields.
What factors do a soil’s suitability depend on?
Climatic factors such as temperatures and rainfall
What ultimately decides the suitability of a region for a specific grape variety?
Continentality - as it affects the temperature and length of the growing season (budding/ripening times)
