The Vascular System Flashcards
What is the blood brain barrier
Protects the brain from bacteria and infection.
Protects from most toxins.
Allows vital nutrients to get through.
What is Endothelial cells
Line the interior of all blood cells.
Packed close together.
Small particles, fat-soluble molecules, and some gasses can pass.
Large molecules like glucose can pass through by proteins.
What is Hyproxia/anoxia
Hyproxia is lack of O2. Anoxia is no 02.
5-8 sec results in LOC
20-25 sec results in electrical shutdown
4-6 min results in permanent brain damage
What do Arteries do
Away from heart. Arterioles are smaller and capillaries are the smallest
What do veins do
Back to heart. Venules are the smallest.
What area does the carotid system support?
Supply to the head and neck
What area does the vertebral-basilar system
Supply O2 and glucose to cervical spinal cord brainstem, cerebellum, thalamus, and occipital lobe.
What is cerebrovascular accident? (CVA)
Stroke, 3rd most common cause of death in the U.S.
Causes: deprived brain cells of O2 and disconnects axonal pathways.
2 types: Occlusive 85-90% Hemorrhagic 10-15%
What is Ischemic stroke
Blood supply is reduced due to a blockage
What is a hemorrhagic stroke?
Blood vessel or artery ruptures. Less frequent type of stroke.
What is arteriovenous malformation? (AVM)
Abnormal tangle of blood vessels that disrupt normal blood flow and oxygen circulation.
What is a transient ischemic attack? (TIA)
Disruption of blood flow to brain that cause stroke-like symptoms but resolve within 24 hours.
