Cranial Nerves Flashcards
CN 1
Olfactory Nerve
Afferent (sensory) only
Function: Smell (olfaction)
CN 2
Optic Nerve
Afferent (sensory) only
Functions: Vision
Visual info to gaze control in brainstem
CN 3
Oculomotor Nerve
Efferent (motor) only
Functions: upward and medial eye movement
Raising upper eye lid
Pupillary constriction (bright light)
Lens curvature for adjusting focal strength
CN 4
Trochlear Nerve
Efferent (motor) only
Function: downward and lateral eye movement
CN 5
Trigeminal nerve
Both sensory and motor
Function: Corneal sensation and reflex. Facial sensation
Motor for mastication
CN 6
Abducens nerve
Efferent (motor) only
Function: moves the eyes laterally
CN 7
Facial Nerve
Both sensory and motor
Function (motor): movement of face, scalp, middle ear. (Sensory): tastes from anterior 2/3 tongue
CN 8
Vestibulocochlear
Afferent (sensory) only
Function: Vestibular & Auditory systems
CN 9
Glossopharyngeal
Both Afferent (sensory) and efferent (motor)
Function: (sensory) Gag reflex . Sensation to pharynx .
(Motor) Motor control for oral, oropharyngeal saliva/mucus. Control of swallow reflex
CN 10
Vagus Nerve
Both sensory (afferent) and motor (efferent).
Function: Sensation from pharynx
Efferent control of (cardiovascular, respiratory, and digestive structures)
Efferent control of velum for swallowing, phonation)
CN 11
Spinal Accessory
Efferent (motor) only
Functions: Control trapezius and sternocleidomastoid (head mvmt)
CN 12
Hypoglossal Nerve
Efferent (motor) only
Function: Controls all movements of tongue
