The Variety Of Life Flashcards
Assimilation
Making part of thing/being
Converts nutrient into fluid/solid substance in body via digestion/absorption
Nutrition
Taking in of nutrients which are organic substances and mineral ions, containing raw materials or energy for growth and tissue repair, absorbing and assimilating them
Excretion
Removal from organisms of toxic materials, waste products of metabolism (chemical reactions in cells including respiration) and substances in excess requirements
Respiration
Chemical reactions that break down nutrient molecules in living cells to release energy
Sensitivity
The ability to detect or sense changes in the environment (stimuli - something which rouses activity (specific) in an organ or tissue) and to make responses
Reproduction
Processes which make more of the same kind of organism
Growth
Permanent increase in size and dry mass (to do with organic chemicals and contain no fluids) by increase in cell number and/or size
Movement
An action by an organism or part of an organism causing a change of position or place
Binomial system
Naming system of organisms - Genus (capital) species (lower case) or in italics or underlined
Lateral line
Only in fish - senses vibrations (replacement of ear canal essentially)
Metabolism
Chemical processes occurring within a living organism to stay alive
Bacteria
Living Cytoplasm Cell surface membrane 1μm Cell wall (not made of cellulose)(often contains murrain) DNA loop NO NUCLEUS can have flagella Defined cell structure Slime capsule Plasmids (tiny loops DNA - parasitic - not actually part of bacterium)
Virus
Not living Capsid (protein coat) Capsomere (subunits of capsid) Strand of DNA or RNA Envelope (injects virus into cell) Cannot survive without host cell for more than 3 days Can only reproduce in host cell 100nm NO NUCLEUS Made of protein No defined cell structure No cytoplasm
DNA
Deoxyribonucleic acid
A length of chemical letters in specific order carrying genetic information
4 letters - A C G T
RNA
Ribonucleic acid
Portion of DNA used to make protein (instead of using all DNA info)
