that there is a sense of superiority, wealth and privilege, this is later confirmed when the uncle makes reference to an ornament
what is different about this poem

she does this on purpose and she lets him talk in a pompous arrogant tone
she uses this to highlight again the male dominated world that existed at the time of writing
what does the uncle start of telling us and what does it convey
i have seen a mob of late / standing sullen in the square/gazing with a sullen stare
-this basically gives us a sense of superiority, wealth ect
he is looking down on them
-views them as basic commoners
when is wealth suggested
from the fact that he is basically watching them from the drawing room
and that his home has a balcony and gate
what does the quote these are follies that subside
even though there is was slight doubt in his mind because the its a mob he is not really bothered
for crystal vase and chandelier
he wants to protect his precious good he is materialistic
conclusion
in short the uncle speaks in drawing room deals with the political upheaval with the uncles position in society under threat. he does not want to accept any type of change or reform and refers to the people looking for change as mob. he is unsympathetic and patronising
