The Trinity Flashcards
What is God like?
He is the creator and sustainer of everything. The Bible says in place like 1 Peter 1:16 and in Leviticus a few times that our we are to be holy as HE IS HOLY. That means set apart, He is perfect in all of His ways.
What are some of the key attributes of God?
He is holy. 1 Sam. 2:2 says there is no one like the Lord. He’s Omnipotent which means unlimited in power…nothing He can’t do like Job 42:2 says.
He’s omniscient and omnipresent, Psalm 139:1 says that he knows everything about me, my thought my words…that if I ascend to heaven or make my bed in Sheol…that He is there.
1 Timothy 1:17 says that He’s eternal, immortal, and the only God. And of course sovereign, like 1 Chronicles 29:11 says that everything in heaven and earth is His…He is “exalted as head over all.”
Is there anything God can’t do?
Titus 1:2 says that God does not lie.
James 1:3 says that He can’t be tempted
And Malachi 3:6 says that He doesn’t change.
Basically, He can’t go against His nature.
Who is Jesus?
John 3:16 says that He is God’s one and only Son. We know from Luke 1 that He was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of a virgin.
At the same time, Jesus is God. He was born, but not created. John 1:1 refers to Jesus as the “Word” of God” and that “in the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God”.
How is Jesus unique from the Father?
Colossians 1:15 says that Jesus is the image of the invisible God. Jesus also tells us in the book of John that if you’ve seen the Son, Him…then you have seen the Father.
So He is God’s Son and the incarnation of God. Philippians 2:5-8 tells us that in His very nature is God…but made himself nothing and took the nature of a servant by being made in human likeness.”
This is why Jesus could be the perfect sacrifice for our sins…Paul in the book of Romans says that God put Jesus forward as the propitiation/payment for our sins. The only one who could pay the debt we owe holy God would have been God Himself.
Jesus is the Messiah, the Christ come to save us from our sin. God wasn’t crucified, He didn’t die on a cross, and He wasn’t raised from the dead and resurrected like Jesus was. 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 says that “Christ died for our sins, according to the Scripture, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures”
Did Jesus ever claim to be God?
Yes, John 10:30, Jesus says that He and the Father (God) are one. And the response of the crowd is to stone. So Jesus asks for some clarity and asks “For what good work are you going to stone me for?” And the people respond by saying “Not for any good works, but for blasphemy, because you, a mere man, claim to be God.”
Is Jesus a created being?
No. John 1 says He existed with God at the beginning and Colossians 1:16 says that through him all things were made.”
What does the Bible say about the Holy Spirit?
He is the third member of the trinity, co-equal with the Father and the Son. Probably the best example of this in Acts 5. When Ananias lied about the price of a piece of property. Peter first says that Ananias lied to the Holy Spirit. And then concludes by saying that He’d lied to God. So lying to the Holy Spirit is lying to God.
We also know that He is a person. He can be grieved, like Ephesians 4 talks about. You can’t grieve an impersonal force. He also fellowships with believers like it says 2 Cor. 13:14
How is the Holy Spirit unique from God the Father and Jesus?
In the OT He would come upon prophets, judges, and kings at specific times and for specific purposes. Judges are a good example.
Now the Bible says that He lives inside of believers. Jesus calls Him the Helper. He regenerates us, seals our salvation (Eph. 4:30), empowers us to be Christ’s witness, equips us with spiritual gifts and produces fruits in our lives.
Where does the Bible teach the concept of the Trinity?
Luke 3, At Jesus’ baptism. Jesus the Son is baptized, God’s Spirit descends on Him in the form of a dove, and God the Father speaks from heavn.
Creation, Genesis is where God creates everything, says the Spirit was hovering over the waters, and John 1:2 says that the Word, Jesus, was with God in the beginning.
Matthew 28:19-20, Great Commission -Go and make disciples of all nations, BAPTIZING THEM IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER, THE SON, AND THE HOLY SPIRIT.”
