The Bible Flashcards

1
Q

What does it mean when we say that the Bible is inspired?

A

2 Timothy 3:16, “All scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness…”

Ultimately, all scripture even though it was physically written by human hand, it was “breathed” out through God. 2 Peter 1:20-21 says that it was spoken from God as the writers were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

Q

2 Peter 1:20-21

A

Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation of things. 21 For prophecy never had its origin in the human will,

…but prophets, though human, spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

Q

Is the Bible infallible? Explain

A

To call the Bible infallible is to say that it is without error and incapable of error. Both are true of the Bible based on the very nature of who God is. He is holy and perfect, so is His word.
Proverbs 30:5 says that every word of God proves true. And Jesus asks in John (17:17) that God would sanctify us by the truth; “your word is truth.”

Q

What makes the Bible unique from other religious books?

A

40 authors, three languages, and on three different continents
Over a period of 1,611 years
Carries the same consistent message of God’s love and redemption for mankind.

No other book has the power to transform people’s lives like the Bible does.
Hebrews 4:12, For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.

Q

How do we know the Bible is valid? Why can we believe it?

A

The Bible opens itself up to be tested
1.) More than 400 prophecies in the Old Testament about Jesus have come to pass (no bones broken, His side would be pierced, laughed/mocked/rejected…by his wounds we are healed, be born of a Virgin)
2.) The Dead Sea Scrolls no difference from the books we have today found in the scrolls
3.) Places in the Bible can be visited today./archaeological finds support it and no finds disprove it.
4. Logical coherency, unity of it’s message.

Q

The Suffering Servant

A

Isaiah 53 is full of messianic prophecy about the Suffering Servant.
- He would be despised and rejected, God placed our sins upon and he was lead like a lamb to the slaughter
verse 5 says, But he was pierced for our transgressions,
he was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was on him,
and by his wounds we are healed.

Q

How did we get the 66 books of the Bible?

A

1 Peter 1:20-21, says that “prophets, though humans, spoke from God as they were carried along by they Holy Spirit.”
I think that’s important to keep in mind when talking about canonization, the criteria of what made it in as one of the books of the Bible. There are five criteria. The book had to be:
1.) book had to be tied to an apostle
2.) book had to be used in early church services
3.) book had to be in harmony with other scripture
4.) must have been written during the apostolic era so false teaching could be denied by the eyewitness of Jesus ministry
5.) book had to have life changing quality to it.

God determined the canon and the church discovered the canon.

Q

What are the main difference in Bible translations? Which ones are dependable?

A

It’s a spectrum on the translations…from word to word at one end and “thought for thought” on the other end. Word for word can be rigid and hard to read, but thought for thought can be too much of a paraphrase. The best are blend of both like NIV, NLT…I personally use ESV since it leans a little more towards word for word but is still very readable.

The Living Bible and The Message are too far on the thought for thought to teach from. KJV is too far on the word for word.
