Pattern?
Zig-zag formation for protection
Front line trench
Where attacks were launched - 50 yards to a mile away from enemy.
Support trench
Several yards behind front-line trench:
Soldiers would retreat to them during an attack.
Reserve trench
Hundreds of yards behind support trench: Soldiers would use these to prepare for a counter-attack
Dugouts
Holes in the side of the trench for troops to take cover.
Conditions
Water-logged, craters and holes due to explosions, very deep mud.
Barbed Wire
Separating trench from no man’s land and acts as protection from enemy fire.
Duckboard
Placed at the bottom of trenches to protect soldiers from trench foot.
Parapet
The front of the trench was known as the parapet.
Sandbags
The top of the parapet consisted of a thick line of sandbags to absorb any bullets or shrapnel.
