What is slavery?
When people are forced to do things that one is unwilling to do, often in unpleasant conditions, being treated like an object and having no way of escape, rights or freedom.
How old is the concept of slavery? What did it begin?
Slavery predates the earliest known written records so it is very old. Due to this, we don’t know when it began.
Define transatlantic.
Across the Atlantic Ocean.
When was the Transatlantic Slave Trade?
1400s-1800s
What percentage of slaves would die on the ship?
Approximately 20%.
What was done to slaves as proof of being bought?
Their ears were cut off.
Who started the Transatlantic Slave Trade?
The Portuguese.
What would Slave traders trade with the African leaders for slaves?
Guns and brandy.
How many slaves did the people on the Zhong decide to kill?
1/2 of the slaves on board the ship.
Approximately how many Africans were enslaved?
Between 9 and 12 million.

Who was the Overseer on a plantation?
A man paid by the master to force the slaves to work harder and supervise them.
Who was the field slave on a plantation?
A slave who worked outdoors on the plantation. Usually tending, planting and harvesting the crops.
Who was the Driver?
A slave persuaded to make other slaves work harder in return for privileges from the master. Hated by other slaves.
Who was a House Slave?
A slave who worked around the masters house.
