the three stages of labor, Flashcards
first stage
It begins with the thinning and dilation of the cervix to open the birth canal. Strong contractions of the uterus stretch the cervix opening to 10 centimeters in diameter. The active phase of stage one lasts several hours and can be painful. An anesthesiologist or nurse anesthetist can help control the pain of labor with medications.
second stage
The second stage is the birth of the baby or expulsion. This happens much faster than the dilation stage. The baby should come out head first and facedown. Any other presentation can slow the delivery and may cause complications for the baby or the mother.
third stage
The final stage is the delivery of the placenta. The placenta, commonly called the afterbirth, should not detach from the uterus until after the baby is born, but it does need to come out.
