Chapter 21 the (5) senses of the body. Explain how they function to allow us to respond to stimuli Flashcards
Touch
it allows at to detect light touch, firm pressure, pain, vibration, temperature, and position. Each receptor is responsible for a specific area of skin. Some areas, such as the fingertips and lips, are more sensitive.
Taste
These receptors can identify many different combinations of sweet, salty, sour, bitter, and savory flavors. Moisture, temperature, and “mouth feel” are also important to taste perception. These inputs trigger memories and emotions. Taste can be enjoyable, unpleasant, or nostalgic.
Smell
It is a chemical sensory system that works in a similar way to taste, but it is much more sensitive. We have about two dozen different kinds of olfactory receptors.
Hearing
the ear is an instrument for detecting sound waves. Sounds are actually waves of molecular vibrations picked up by the ear and converted to electrical impulses that are sent to the brain. The ear can be divided into three sections: the outer ear, the inner ear, and the middle ear.
Vision
our eyes are photosensitive, meaning they can detect light within the visible spectrum. That light passes through several layers of the eye to reach the photoreceptors.
