Chapter 11 sight, hearing, touch, smell Flashcards
explain how healthcare worker uses their sense of sight.
healthcare workers look for the signs of injury or illness using inspection. also called objective observations, signs can be seen (as with bruises, swelling, rashes, or cuts).
explain how healthcare worker uses their sense of hearing.
listening to a patient’s statements or complaints reveals symptoms. Also called subjective observations, signs cannot be seen or measured by a healthcare worker.
Explain how a healthcare worker uses their sense of touch
healthcare providers use palpation, or touching and applying pressure, to measure pulse rates and assess blood flow to many areas of the body. They also use palpation to identify abnormal conditions such as swelling, unusual hardness, body parts that are out of place, and the location of pain.
Explain how a healthcare worker uses their sense of smell
healthcare workers pay attention to body odors, as well as unusual breath, wound, urine, or stool ( waste material released during a bowel movement) odors. While the concept of using odors in patient assessment may not be appealing, odors do provide essential signals about a patient’s health.
