what are the three marks of existence?
-the 3 parts of Buddha’s teachings of life to his many disciples
- according to Buddhists these 3 parts teach about how the world works and therefore how they live
what are the three marks of existence called
-Anicca
-Dukkha
-Anatta
what is Annica?
the Buddhist teaching;
-nothing in the world is permanent [known as impermanence
- everything is always changing, nothing stays the same
-example=life is like a river, flowing on and on
What is Dukkha?
the Buddhist teaching;
-because everything is always changing, nothing in life is perfect
-therefore suffering is everywhere
-always be suffering “dukkha”
example= buddha said “ birth is dukkha , aging is dukkha, sicknesses is dukkha, death is dukkha
What is Anatta?
the Buddhist teaching;
- there is no eternal, unchanging soul
- anatta is the principle of “ no self “
- instead the Buddha taught , what does carry on to the next life is a person’s life force[Kamma]
example;
we are just a collection of changing characteristics[ e.g height, weight , modd]
What does this mean for Buddhists today?
- Buddhists believe that it is more important to try and reduce suffering in the world because suffering is a part of believe alive
- because all things decay and change, Buddhists try not to crave material things because when they decay this causes suffering
example; - buying a new phone, when it eventually breaks this causes suffering
why do Buddhist monks make mandalas?
they create mandalas to represent Buddhist teachings and to focus their
minds other than the self. therefore it is classified as a meditative ritual
