White mans burdens
Often associated with Rudyard Kiplings 1989 poem which encouraged this behaviour. A duty formerlly asserted by white people to manage the affair of the non-white people whom they believed to be less developed. In colonialist ideology it was the noble duty of civilising non-western societies. Framed colonization as a moral obligation.
Stanford prison experiment
1971 a tea, of psychologists executed an experiment with a mock prison setting wuth college students role-playing as prisoners and guards to test the power of the social situation to determine behaviour. Guards quickly became abusive and the prisoners became submissive aand distressed. It was shut down after 6 day because of psychological damage. It draws a parallel with the colonists and colonised.
Hegemony
Leadership or dominance especially by one state or social group over others. This would be the dominance of the colonists over the colonised, not just through military and politics but by shaping culture and ideology. In this case european norms are regarded as superior and and they also supress indigenous norms.
Colonialism
Policy or practice of acquirin full or partial conreol over another country, occupying it with settlers and exploiting it economically. An example of this would be the british colonies in america.
Imperialism
Policy of extending a countrys power and influence through colonization, military force or other means. May or may not involve direct settlement (US influence in latin America)
Orientalism
Style, artefacts or traits considered characteristics of the people and cultures of Asia. Orientalism refers to the way Western powers stereotyped and misrepresented Eastern cultures (Asia, the Middle East, and North Africa) as exotic, backward, and inferior.

real story pocahontas
pocahontas was the daughter of pwhatan a native american chief of a tribe in virginia and she did encounter emglish settlers including john smith. The movie is a romanticized version of reality. Pocahontas did facilitate peace between her tribe and english colonies in Jamestown. She was later captured by the english , converted to christianity took the name of rebecca and married john rolfe an english settler. And died young in english.
universalism
in CHRISTIAN THEOLOGY its the belief that all humankind will eventually be saved (sins pardoned) And in general loyalty to and concern for other without regard to national or other allegiances.
Mimicry
Action or skill of imitating someone or something. Also the practice of imitating the language, culture or behaviour of a colonizing power by colonized subjects. This act often serves to gain social acceptance or manipulate power dynamics, reflecting the complexities of identity and resistance within post colonial contexts.
Subaltern
- noun: An officer in the british army below the rank of captain, especially a second leitenant.
- adjective: of lower status. In post-colonial theory this describes lower social classes and the other social groups displaced to the margins of society. In an imperial colony this is a native man or woman without human agency as defined his and her social status.
Hybridity in colonialism
The production of the discriminatiry identities that secyre the oyre and original identiry of authority. The creation of transcultural forms withinf the contact zone produces by colonizers.
Eurocentrism
fpcusing on eurpoean culture or hsitory to the exclusion of a wider view od the world; implicitly regarding european culture as pre eminent.
WITHIN COLONIALISM:
Belief that european culture, value and history are superiot and should be the global standard. This mindset justified european dominationover other cultures portraying non- european societies as inferior and in need of civilisation.
Colonialist fantasy
An ideology that reomanticizes colonialism, portrayin it as a noblr middion of progress, civilisation or adventure while down playing or ignoring it’s violence, exploitation and oppression. Often depicting colonizers as heroic figuresand indigenous people as either needing salvation or an obstacke to conquest. (colonialist are the ones facing the hardships doing something good “chariy”)
