White mans burdens

A

Often associated with Rudyard Kiplings 1989 poem which encouraged this behaviour. A duty formerlly asserted by white people to manage the affair of the non-white people whom they believed to be less developed. In colonialist ideology it was the noble duty of civilising non-western societies. Framed colonization as a moral obligation.

Stanford prison experiment

A

1971 a tea, of psychologists executed an experiment with a mock prison setting wuth college students role-playing as prisoners and guards to test the power of the social situation to determine behaviour. Guards quickly became abusive and the prisoners became submissive aand distressed. It was shut down after 6 day because of psychological damage. It draws a parallel with the colonists and colonised.

Hegemony

A

Leadership or dominance especially by one state or social group over others. This would be the dominance of the colonists over the colonised, not just through military and politics but by shaping culture and ideology. In this case european norms are regarded as superior and and they also supress indigenous norms.

pocahontas was the daughter of pwhatan a native american chief of a tribe in virginia and she did encounter emglish settlers including john smith. The movie is a romanticized version of reality. Pocahontas did facilitate peace between her tribe and english colonies in Jamestown. She was later captured by the english , converted to christianity took the name of rebecca and married john rolfe an english settler. And died young in english.

Often depicting colonizers as heroic figuresand indigenous people as either needing salvation or an obstacke to conquest. (colonialist are the ones facing the hardships doing something good “chariy”)
