the signifier
the part of communication that carries the message
the signified
that which is communicated
icon
physical resemblance to the signified
symbol
sometimes the meaning is obvious but it can also be an arbitrary relationship (heart= i love you)
index
the signifier can not exist without the presence of the signified (dark clouds are and index of rain)
metaphor
comparison between two similar or dissmilar things. An imaginative leap is necessary. In a metaphor x is y.
simile
when the comparison is stated. In a simile we say x is like y. (as)
metonym
one thing is associated with or directly related to another. The thing depicted is used to represent something that is not depeicted. (crown = queen)
Synecdoche
Pay attention to what it implies. What matters is not what you put into a piece of communication, but what you leave out. A synecdoche is a part of what you are talking about or the whole reffering to a part. (lets put our heads together)
