The Thigh Flashcards
Fascia of the thigh has 2 layers
Superficial fascia
Deep fascia: fascia lata
iliotibial tract: part of fascia lata, provides stability for hip and knee
identify superficial veins
Great saphenous v.
Small saphenous v.
Deep veins
accompanies major arteries
Perforating veins
connect superficial veins to deep vein, drain blood from superficial veins to deep veins
Great saphenous v.
begins at dorsal venous arch of foot
ascends in front of medial malleolus along with medial aspect of tibia along with saphenous nerve
passes through saphenous opening- fossa ovalis in fascia lata
joint Femoral vein
Great saphenous vein is often chosen for
venous cut down (near medial malleolus)
Lympahtic drainage formed by
- superficial inguinal nodes
- deep inguinal nodes
- popliteal nodes
superficial inguinal nodes
receives lymph from the thigh
perineum
gluteal region
lower abdominal wall
deep inguinal nodes
receives lymph from superficial inguinal nodes and all the deep structures of lower limb
popliteal nodes
receives lymph from heel, lateral side of foot
superficial and deep inguinal nodes drain into…?
external iliac nodes
Anterior compartment supplied by?
Femoral nerve
posterior compartment supplied by?
Sciatic nerve
Medial compartment supplied by?
Obturator n.
Sartorius muscle
- femoral n.
- flexes, abducts, laterally rotates thigh at hip joint
- flexes and medially rotates leg at knee joint
iliacus and psoas
*femoral n./ lumbar plexus (L1,2,3)
Flexes thigh at hip joint
Pectineus
*femoral n./ pectineus
Flexes and adducts thigh at hip joint
rectus femoris
Vastus medialis, lateralis, intermedius (Quadriceps femoris)
*femoral n.
Extension of leg at knee joint
Femoral nerve (L2,3,4) branches in the thigh
anterior division
Sartorius, Pectineus muscle
intermediate cutaneous n.
medial cutaneous n.
Femoral n. posterior division
Rectus femoris m. and 3 vasti muscles
-Saphenous n.
Patellar tendon reflex
tapping ligamentum patellae
positive=extension of knee
afferent/efferent= femoral n.
spinal center=L2,3,4
when is patellar reflex lost?
injury to femoral n. or spinal center
Muscles of medial compartment innervated by
Obturator n. (L2,3,4)
Hamstring part: Sciatic n.
Obturator nerve in clinical application
diseases of hip joint- pain on medial side of thigh
Inflammation or carcinoma of ovary- peritonitis
irritation of obturator n.
