The Thigh Flashcards
What are the 3 compartments of the thigh?
- anterior
- medial
- posterior
What are the 2 main parts of the ANTERIOR compartment of the thigh?
- sartorius
- quadriceps femoris
What 4 muscles make up the quadriceps femoris?
- vastus medialis
- vastus lateralis
- vastus intermedius
- rectus femoris
Sartorius (O.I.A.I) - longest muscle in the body
origin: anterior superior iliac spine
insertion: medial tibial condyle
action: flexes the knee
innervation: femoral nerve
Vastus medialis (O.I.A.I)
origin: medial side of linea aspera
insertion: patella
action: extends knee
innervation: femoral nerve
Vastus lateralis (O.I.A.I)
origin: lateral side of linea aspera
insertion: patella
action: extends knee
innervation: femoral nerve
Vastus intermedius (O.I.A.I)
origin: shaft of femur
insertion: superior border of patella
action: extends knee
innervation: femoral nerve
Rectus femoris (O.I.A.I)
origin: anterior inferior iliac spine
insertion: superior border of patella
action: extends knee, flexes hip (kicking action)
innervation: femoral nerve
Iliopsoas muscle (O.I.A.I)
iliacus origin: blade of ilieum
psoas origin: transverse process of lumbar spine
insertion: lesser trochanter
action: N/A
innervation: lumbar plexus (L2, L3)
What is NAVL?
Nerve
Artery
Vein
Limphatics
What is the main action of the muscles in the MEDIAL compartment of the thigh?
adductors of the hip (thigh)
generally innervated by the obturator nerve with 2 exceptions!!!
What muscles make up the ANTERIOR layer of the medial compartment of the thigh?
- gracilis
- pectineus
- adductor longus
Gracilis (O.I.A.I)
origin: pubis
insertion: upper tibia
action: adduction, flexing and medially rotating the hip
innervation: obturator nerve
Pectineus (O.I.A.I)
origin: pubis
insertion: uppermost muscle on the linea aspera
action: adducts the hip
innervation: femoral and obturator nerves
Adductor longus (O.I.A.I)
origin: pubis
insertion: below pectineus on linea aspera
action: adducts the hip
innervation: obturator nerve
What muscles make up the POSTERIOR layer of the medial compartment of the thigh?
- adductor brevis
- adductor magnus
Adductor brevis (O.I.A.I)
origin: pubis
insertion: behind the pectineus and above adductor magnus on the linea aspera
action: adducts the hip
innervation: obturator nerve
Adductor magnus (O.I.A.I)
origin: pubis
insertion: top part is below the adductor brevis on linea aspera, lower part inserts into adductor tubercle on the medial epicondyle
action: adducts the hip
innervation: top part is obturator nerve, bottom part is tibial division of the sciatic nerve
What 3 muscles make up the POSTERIOR compartment of the thigh?
- biceps femoris
- semitendinosus
- semimembranosus
Biceps femoris (O.I.A.I)
long head origin: ischial tuberosity
short head origin: linea aspera
insertion: head of fibula
long head action: extends hip, flexes knee
short head action: flexes knee
long head innervation: tibial division of the sciatic nerve
short head innervation: common perineal division of the sciatic nerve
Semitendinosus (O.I.A.I)
origin: ischial tuberosity
insertion: proximal tibia
action: extends hip, flexes knee
innervation: tibial division of sciatic nerve
Semimembranosus (O.I.A.I)
origin: ischial tuberosity
insertion: behind medial condyle of tibia
action: extends hip, flexes knee
innervation: tibial division of sciatic nerve
Lateral meniscus
- round
- only attaches centrally
- moves only anteriorly and posteriorly
Medial meniscus
- fixed
- cannot move
- more damage if injured
