The Gluteal Region Flashcards
What are the 3 bones that fuse together to make the hip bone?
- ilium
- ischium
- pubis
What are the 4 spines of the ilium?
- anterior superior iliac spine
- posterior superior iliac spine
- anterior inferior iliac spine
- posterior inferior iliac spine
What are the 2 ligaments that run from the sacrum to the ischium?
- sacrotuberous ligament
- sacrospinous ligament
What are the 3 gluteal muscles?
- gluteus maximus
- gluteus medius
- gluteus minimus
Gluteus maximus (O.I.A.I)
origin: posterior of ilium, sacroiliac joint, and sacrotuberous ligament
insertion: deep 1/3 inserts on gluteal tuberosity, superficial 2/3 inserts on the iliotibial band
action: hip extensor, lateral rotator, and adductor
innervation: inferior gluteal nerve (L5, S1, S2)
Gluteus medius (O.I.A.I)
origin: middle of iliac blade
insertion: greater trochanter
action: medial rotator and abductor
innervation: superior gluteal nerve (L4, L5, S1)
Gluteus minimus (O.I.A.I)
origin: anterior iliac blade
insertion: greater trochanter
action: medial rotator and abductor
innervation: superior gluteal nerve (L4, L5, S1)
Tensor fascia latae (O.I.A.I)
origin: anterior superior iliac spine
insertion: iliotibial band and Gerdy’s tubercle
action: stabilizes knee
innervation: superior gluteal nerve
What are the 6 lateral rotators?
- piriformis
- obturator internus
- gemellus superior
- gemellus inferior
- obturator externus
- quadrates femoris
Piriformis (O.I)
origin: inside the pelvis
insertion: greater trochanter
Obturator internus and the Gemelli (O.I)
obturator origin: inside obturator membrane
gemelli origin: edge of foramen
obturator insertion: greater trochanter
gemelli insertion: above and below obturator internus
Obturator externus (O.I)
origin: outside the obturator membrane
insertion: runs laterally to the base of the greater trochanter
Quadrates femoris (O.I)
origin: ischial tuberosity
insertion: quadrate tubercle
