The Test of Discipleship Flashcards
What happens when a person is reborn by belief in Christ? 2 Cor 5:17
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.
What does it mean to be a new creation?
If the heart has been renewed by the Spirit of God, the life will bear witness to the fact…A change will be seen in the character, the habits, and the pursuits. The contrast will be clear and decided between what they have been and what they are. The character is revealed not by occasional good deeds and occasional misdeeds but by the tendency of the habitual words and acts.
A selfish heart can perform generous actions, how then, can we determine whose side we’re on? Gal 5:22-23
Who has the heart? Of whom do we love to converse? If we are Christ’s, our thoughts are with Him. All we have and are is consecrated to Him. Those who become new creatures in Christ Jesus will bring forth the fruits of the Spirit, love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.
If you’re born again under the new covenant, will you keep the commandments of God? Heb 10:16
“I will put My laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them.” And if the law is written in the heart, will it not shape the life?
What is the true test of discipleship? 1 John 3:7
Obedience—the service and allegiance of love—is the true sign of discipleship.
Here is the true test. If we abide in Christ, if the love of God dwells in us, our feelings, thoughts, purposes, and our actions will be in harmony with the will of God as expressed in the precepts of His holy law.
Little children, let no one deceive you. He who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous.
What did Jesus ask of those who know and love Him? John 14:15 - 1 John 2:3-6
“If you love Me, keep My commandments.
Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments. He who says, “I know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him. He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked.
Can we boast of our commandment keeping? NO! Phil 2:13
for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.
With Christ operating in you, you will manifest the same spirit and do the same good works of righteousness and obedience. So we have nothing in ourselves of which to boast. We have no ground for self-exaltation. Our only foundation of hope is in the righteousness of Christ imputed to us and by His Spirit working in and through us.
