The Synapse Flashcards
1
Q
Synapse
A
-a space or gap between 2 neurons
2
Q
Neuromuscular Junction
A
-between a neuron and the effecter
3
Q
Neurotransmitters
A
- chemical messangers secreted by neurons that carry the signal from one end to another
- NT’s bind with receptors n dendrites on the post synap neuron
- impact of NT depends on it’s type
4
Q
Excitatory Neurotransmitters
A
- open sodium gates
- increase chance of action potential occuring
- electrical impulse can continue
5
Q
Inhibatory Neurotransmitters
A
- close sodium gates, open potassium gates
- decreases chances of action potential occuring
- electrical impulse stops
6
Q
What happens to NT once it’s job is done?
A
- Reuptake: reabsorbed into vesicle
- Destruction: broken down & made inactive by an enzyme
7
Q
Acetlcholine (PNS)
A
- excitatory NT of skeletal muscles
- inhibatory NT of cardiac muscle
- broken down in synapse by enzyme cholinesterase
- abnormal production
- some muscles constantly conracting leading to death
8
Q
Noadrenaline (PNS)
A
- excitatoy NT
- similar to adrenaline
- prepares body for stressful situations “fight or flight”
- abnormal production
- anxiety, insomnia, high blood pressure, exhaustion
9
Q
Dopamine (CNS)
A
- can be excitatory or inhibatory
- controls skeletal muscles & body movement
- controls sensation of pleasure and reward
- abnormal production
- ovrproduction- schizoprenia
- unerproduction-parkinsons
10
Q
Serotin (PNS)
A
- ihibatory NT
- involved with temp regulation, mood & sleep
- abnormal production
- underproduction is linked to depression
