Digestion by enzymes and acids
What role does Stomach acids play in digestion
Acids help the digestion of food by activating enzymes that will digest part of the food

Proteins
What enzyme is responsible for breaking down the proteins in food
Pepsin
What is a sphincter
it is a muscular ring
What is the main function of the small intestine
The main function of the small intestine is to absorb nutrients
What type of nutrients does the small intestine absorb?
glucose, amino acids, fatty acids, water
What is the small intestine lined with?
the small intestine is lined with many parts of villi
What does the villi do?
The villi increase the surface area of the small intesinte, this means that it is easier to absorb nutrients
What is the pancreas located?
is a long, flat gland that lies in the abdomen behind the stomach
What does the pancreas contain?
It contains digestive enzymes such as protease, amylase and lipase
What does bile do?
Bile emulsifies (breaks/dissolves) fats down into smaller pieces
What does the gallbladder do?
it stores bile after it has been produced by the liver
What does the bile duct do?
it carries bile from the gallbladder to the small intestine
